The Story
The overarching theme of the whole series is how everything in the Bible is all tied together and not just a collection of stories. With the intro we wanted to give an abridged telling of some of the major points in the Bible. We started with the gears of time, creation, the fall of Adam and Eve, God giving the Ten Commandments, Jesus being born, the trial of the disciples at sea, Jesus’ death on the cross, His resurrection, and the giving of the Holy Spirit to the disciples at Pentecost.
Title Design & Animation
With the title design we wanted something that was clean and classic, but still a little modern. In the animation we wanted to focus on gear movement as well as things or ideas coming into alignment. The text animation for The Chronological Gospels is a style that we are using in the rest of the series inside of the show.
Thinking Through all the Levels
As we were working on selecting the materials for each element we wanted to make sure they reinforced the telling of the story. In the Bible, different metals have symbolic meanings. By using these this not only brought visual interest, but also added an extra element of enhancement to the story telling.
In the designs of each scene we wanted to incorporate gears and clockwork not only for the motion, but to help reinforce the concept of chronology and time.
For a different effect from the standard scratches and dirt and grime usually applied to metal in 3D animations, we decided to go the route of hammered textures or etched designs to convey the materials of rock, grass or wood. The only time we strayed from this is with the boat on the water where we use bronze corrosion because it was “wet” and in a storm.
Concept Art
The gear on the left has all of the Jewish months of the year and the gear on the right has the phases of the moon which dictate when the beginning of each month starts.
